Touching Base

Sisters

Before Easter, I made a quickie trip to Florida to touch base with my youngest sister Maria.

Yes, we are doing this selfie in our pjs. Don't judge. Nothing more fun than just lazing around together...

Kim was on a business trip, so I traveled alone, flying into the nice little airport at Gainesville and renting this cute car for a couple of days.

Reese-2

I finally got to meet Maria and Seanna's horse Reese, a gorgeous creature that Seanna showed English-style last year.

Such beautiful girls!

Reese-2

I painted this watercolor for Maria's birthday and surprised her with it when I arrived. I wanted to make it look like Reese, so Seanna had sent me a couple of photos to help.

I think it turned out pretty good for a watercolor novice!

Maria had to work a short schedule the one full day I was there, so I took my camera in my fun little ride and went on a photo "safari" nearby.

This was a cool place, but I got kinda creeped out as I was the only one there. I didn't want to roam too far from my vehicle.

You know, for fear of the Boogie-Man hiding back in that forest....

Andrewwildliferefuge-8

I can never get enough of the Spanish moss hanging off the trees....

Wildphlox-2

Beautiful wild phlox were in bloom everywhere!

Cedarkey-9

After spending an hour at the wildlife refuge, I drove to Cedar Key on the Gulf coast. I knew I'd find some sea birds there...

Andrewwildliferefuge-5

But first I had to have lunch...an ice cream cone, of course!

Pelicans are such interesting birds and fun to watch! They always look grumpy....

LOTS of pelicans hanging around the Cedar Key harbor, following the fishing boats...

A group of white ibises flying overhead....

Cedarkey-8

Cedar Key is a fun little town. I was there shortly after the President Biden/airplane stairs mishap...thought this sign was clever...

Devilsden-2

Maria met me for an afternoon excursion together. We checked out Devil's Den Prehistoric Spring, but unless we wanted to put on wetsuits and snorkel in a cave (hard "no" to both), there wasn't much to do there.

Except this totem pole made for a good photo op...

Cedarlakesgardens-2

Right next to Devil's Den is the Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens, so we decided to check it out instead. No wetsuits required...

Cedarlakesgardens-2

Lots of walking paths surrounding a lake...

Man-made waterfalls...

...and plenty of huge koi fish in the ponds.

Skittering critters like this brown anole are all over the rock walls...

Cedarlakesgardens-11

...and these "ferocious" crawlers were on all the handrails! Maria and I squealed more than once over hand encounters with these fuzzy caterpillars.

Resident tortoise marks the beginning and end of the path.

A relaxing stroll through gardens restores the soul...

For our evening entertainment/laughs (in our family, entertainment always includes lots of silliness!), Maria and I did a watercolor painting tutorial together.

It was a short visit, but a sweet time with my precious sister...

...touching base.
