Meandering to Madison
09/11/2020
As we've been doing the past few years, Kim and I planned a little day trip for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, heading south toward Madison on the Ohio River.
We left before the sun came up, in part so we could enjoy breakfast on the road. We love to stop at little diners, especially those who don't have a "Mask Required" sign on the door.
Most tables in Pop's were busy, and Kim quickly pointed out that (besides the waitress and cook) I was the only woman in the dining room. Most were farmers and highway workers...they always know the best restaurants with good old home-style cooking!
A beautiful church along the way...
I love it when Kim gets off the highways and finds little country roads.
Note to self: before our next road trip, clean the windshield!
Always fun to see what's beyond the tree canopy....
Our first stop was Brush Creek....
The fog was still settled upon the water. Completely still there, except for the calls of many birds we couldn't see.
Would have been a perfect perch for a heron or kingfisher...we saw neither. But the reflection in the fog was still kinda cool.
More southward meandering, stopping along the way to capture some pretty landscapes.
Our "loose" destination was Madison...no intention to spend the day there as we've done before, but to enjoy the scenery along the Ohio River.
A stroll along the Madison riverfront...
Tire swing jump into the Ohio River, anyone? The day we were there, the swing was waiting....
A few Madison historic landmarks...
...including my favorite, the Lanier mansion. We toured this home a few years ago, very beautiful on the inside. This is the view from the river.
Madison's version of Stonehenge...don't know the story of these rocks, but it is an interesting landmark.
Cool moving sculptures...
Meandering along the Ohio River Scenic By-Way, we saw a group of tom turkeys...
He tried to hide behind the wildflowers...
Leaving the river behind, Kim turned the car northward along my favorite kind of road...
Yep, southern Indiana grammar at its best!
Not much to see at Splinter Ridge, but we did find a couple of trees to empty our bladders.
We didn't see much wildlife at all, but we saw LOTS of farm fields. Kim said we should call it our Corn and Soybeans tour.
This is iconic rural Indiana in late summer.
Lunch at the Rolling Pin. We saved room for ice cream later that afternoon...I guess I was too busy eating my treat to take a photo! But we tried a new (to us!) spot in Rushville, Stagg's Dairy Treats. Highly recommend!
Another very interesting church building...not your typical Methodist architecture!
These folks are permanently ready for winter with their tire snowman. Uh...no....very creative, but not for me.....
Patriotism is alive and well in the heartland! We saw many American flags along the way.
What a refreshing day, on the road with my man, no particular agenda in mind...
....just meandering to Madison.
