The Birds of Summit

Summitlake-21

While the nesting pair of bald eagles are the stars of the Summit Lake avian show, there are some other beautiful birds to be enjoyed (and photographed!).

Here is a collection of photos that I've taken in and around Summit Lake State Park this month...

Early morning fog...

Canada geese are common any more, but still so lovely...

...and I do appreciate a nice reflection any time!

White pelicans migrating through hung around for a couple of weeks but I never saw them when they were close to shore.  But still...very cool and first time I've ever seen them around here...

Lots and lots of American coots...also a favorite meal (and easy target!) for the eagles...

Summitlake-13

A few greater scaups in the mix...

...as well as some buffleheads (white cheek stripe).

Summitlake-2

I know it's not a bird, but still thought it was a cool shot!

You know spring has arrived when the red-winged blackbirds come home...

Osprey...so intimidating with that sharp golden eye...

Did you know a group of cormorants is called a "gulp of cormorants?"  If you aren't careful, you might learn something new every day.

Double-crested cormorants...

Summitlake-13

Not sure what kind of little duck this is, but he's cute!

Not a bird, but who could resist photographing that adorable-but-twitchy face?!

Especially during this time of isolation, it's nice to take a short drive to see some fresh scenery and check out...

...the birds of Summit.
