Favorites from North Pantanal

Toucan-18

Before we head south down the Transpantaneira Highway deeper into the heart of the Pantanal, a few more favorite photos from our stay at the Rio Claro Lodge.

I only had the opportunity to photograph this one chestnut-eared aracari...

Toucan-16

...but wow, what a stunning bird!

Toucan-18

A group of toco toucans perched right over our heads the morning before we left.  So beautiful!  Tocos are the largest of the toucans.

A crab-eating fox roamed the grounds a couple of times while we were roaming too....

Our first jabiru was wading in the water trying to fight off annoying bees.  These storks are huge...we saw many more later that week.

If you think this trogon is lovely from the back...

...you should see its underside!  Same bird...flew to a different branch.  Amazing!

A successful fishing expedition for this pretty little female kingfisher...

Piranhafishing-4

But I'm a bit partial to this handsome male fisherman, going after piranhas with a simple string and hook baited with pieces of fresh fish tied to a bamboo pole.

Piranhafishing-2

One cast = 1 nice piranha!  Between Kim and Benedito (smiling in the back), they caught several piranhas in just a few minutes.

A pair of golden-collared macaws...someone please snip off that dead branch in front of her face...it's messing up my picture!  I asked her to scoot a little to the left, but she was not cooperative.

Pretty kingbird...

Elegant fly-catcher....

And I'll finish with this shimmering jacamar...

...one of my favorites from north Panatanal.
