Small Wonders

Gymn-4

Gymnasts have always fascinated me...

...probably because I was born big and tall, uncoordinated and inflexible.  And those traits have only gotten worse over my 61 years...

I love watching gymnastics competitions, so when three of my little church friends were competing nearby, I had the privilege of cheering on these amazing girls as they showcased their God-given talents!

Gymn-4

We came to watch the two girls on the right...Lydia (blonde) and Emily (brunette)...compete as part of the Small Wonders Gymnastics Academy team.  Both are 6th-graders, with Lydia being in Division 8 and Emily in Division 7.  (Our young friend Evelyn, who is a 3rd-grader in Division 5, competed in the later session.  Photos from her competition in tomorrow's blog post)

This was our cheering section, about 20 friends from our church family.

Lydia's dad Warren is one of our church elders and a dear friend who has helped me out many times with church projects.  He assists the Small Wonders team, spotting and hauling equipment around.  I think he got as much of a workout as the girls did!

Emily did great on the uneven bars!

You're on, Lyd!

Gymn-9

Lydia had a fantastic routine and scored her personal bars best with a 9.35 (if I remember correctly)!

Oh Lydia!  That makes my back ache just watching you!  And to think she's on a 4"-beam a few feet off the ground.....

Fantastic, Lydia!!!

Awaiting her score with Dad Warren...

Gymn-182

Gymnasts are not only physically amazing, they are some of the most mentally tough athletes.  Not only do they have to be fearless and daring, but they have to put their emotions aside in difficult situations, being able to finish a routine after a big mistake without breaking.  They may be small, but these girls are mightily strong both in body and spirit!

Gymn-192

Finally, the vault.  Emily goes first.

In her division, the girls vault onto the high mats...different from what I had seen before.

Gymn-192

She did great!
