Sandhill Cranes and Fall Foliage
Into the Okavango Delta

"Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold."

That childhood song kept running through my mind last night.  Long-time friends truly are gold in a girl's life, and last night I had the blessing of sharing precious time with some of my gold.

Twenty-five years ago, Tammy (in middle wearing gray) moved away from our church and community, relocating first to the east coast and eventually landing in Arizona.

Megan Smith & Emily July 1991

When Tammy left, her daughter Megan, who was one of my daughter Emily's best friends at the time, was only 8.  My children were young, life was busy and hectic.  I, like all the other young (at the time!) mothers in the photo above, were just trying to survive the craziness of raising a family.

We tried to stay in touch, but that was pre-Facebook and before everyone carried a cell phone.  The other 5 of us are church family and see each other often but, despite our efforts, distance and time eventually drifted Tammy away from us.

Amazingly enough, Facebook brought Tammy back into our lives again!  Through the magic of technology, we reconnected with her online a few years ago.

And now Tammy has moved back home.  To Indiana.

Last night was the first time we had all been together in 25 years.  We had a lot of catching up to do...Tammy filled us in on her life's journey and each of us filled Tammy in on our stories.  Every story was unique, filled with much joy and unspeakable tragedies, blessings and on-going struggles.  We cackled and giggled a lot, we hugged and cried a bit, and we prayed together.

We loved each other.  And it was as if we had never really been apart.

A lot of water has gone under our bridges in 25 years, but one thing has only gotten stronger and has brought us all where we are today:  our unshakeable faith in God and his unimaginable love for us.  That faith cements our friendship together.  We are survivors, all of us, but only by the grace of God.

"Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold."

These beautiful girls..

...are gold.
