Memorable Moments from Kirkman's

Ssmisc-16

Breakfast in the bush...a nice surprise in the middle of one of our morning game drives.

Ssmisc-15

We aren't just talking a bowl of Cheerios and a juice box...this was a full-blown hot breakfast served on white tablecloths!

Ssmisc-15

Complete with a hand-washing station....

Ssmisc-33

During each game drive, we'd take a snack and bathroom break...out in the bush.

Josh and Vusi setting up the goodies....

Vusi grabbed my camera to take this photo...

Vusi and Josh, our fearless leaders...

Despite its wildness, there is such a quiet peacefulness out there....

All the camps have a protected outdoor gathering area they call the "boma," and one night we had dinner served under the stars in the boma, complete with musical and dance entertainment by the camp staff.

One afternoon we were "chilling" (as much as one can in 90-degree heat) on the porch...

Kirkmans-80

...when we noticed vultures in the trees just beyond the bank and circling in the air.

Kirkmans-85

In the bush, vultures mean something interesting is happening on the ground...either a kill has occurred or they are anticipating one soon.

As Kim got out his binoculars, he saw down in the dry riverbed a big male lion trotting along.

Can you spot him?

Kirkmans-85

Very unusual to see a lion roaming about in the heat of the day, as they sleep 23 hours of every day and do their prowling in the early morning or after dark.

And then, as we watched, another male lion was coming along behind him.

They were the same two brothers we had seen earlier that morning, watching the elephants in the riverbed.

We never did figure out what drama had unfolded down there.  By the time we left for our afternoon drive, the vultures had moved on and we couldn't find the big boys.

We hated to leave this lovely place, but more African adventures awaited.

But we took with us many wonderful...

...memorable moments from Kirkman's.
