Road-Tripping with the Gray Gang

Road-12

It's a long 15-hour drive from our cabin to our beach house on Emerald Isle...doable and has been done a few times, but we've found we enjoy the trip much more if we break up the drive into a couple of days.

Road-1

The 5 households of us do not caravan to the beach.

A couple of reasons:

    1.  We all have different schedules and different stopping needs

    2.  But most importantly, the Grays are all LEADERS and none are followers.  We could never caravan because everyone would want to be leading and no one following.  That's just how they all are.

So we all leave approximately the same time and meet at the beach, and sometimes at the hotel stop on the way down.

That way every Gray can be his/her own leader.  It works better that way.

A few years ago, Kim and I discovered a wonderful little diner in Washington Courthouse, Ohio where we like to stop for breakfast each trip.

Road-2

Mainly for this reason.

Kim loves their 1/2"-thick pork steak and eggs.  That's some serious meat there!

Road-15

Okay...how about we play a little game?  I'll call it "Where are we now?"

So...where are we???

Just inside the border of West Virginia.  I LOVE this little cabin...there's nearly always a quilt hanging on the porch!

Road-15

Where are we now?

Hopping on the West Virginia turnpike...

Road-15

Kim hates having to slow down to pay the toll...

Road-6

Where are we now???

Beckley, West Virginia...ice cream for lunch!

Road-15

Where are we now???

Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.....

Road-8

Where are we now???

One of the two tunnels we go through in Virginia....

Road-8

This one is easy!!!

Road-8

Where are we now???

Iconic Pilot Mountain.  Also known as Nipper Knob (Kim's name for it...).  Kristoffer's family took a side trip up to the mountain into Pilot Mountain State Park...we've been there before, a nice little off-road stop to stretch your legs and burn off a little kid-energy.

Hotel-1

Four of our five family groups stayed at the same Greensboro, North Carolina hotel and met for dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant.  Table for 17, please....

My girl Kassie liked her spaghetti...

Daniel wasn't having nearly as much fun as his siblings....

Hard to believe, but it was actually a tad bit chilly!  Pretty much unheard of in North Carolina in July!

After an entertaining breakfast at the hotel, we all loaded up for the final leg of our trip.

The next time we'd meet up would be on the BEACH!!!

Two-month-old Daniel was obviously totally thrilled with his first major travel experience...
