Natural Bridge Caverns

Cavern-1

North of San Antonio, Texas, not far from where my brother lives with his family, is this natural rock bridge.

Cavern-6

Standing there marveling at God's architecture, you would never know there is an amazing, complex system of caves just beneath your feet!

Alli and her three children took Mama and me there one morning.

Cavern-11

It's impossible to capture the massiveness of these underground tunnels in a photo...just HUGE!

Cavern-9

The story goes that back in 1960, 4 college students explored the area around the natural bridge, convinced there were underground passages there. They felt a draft, moved a few rocks, and crawled into what was a 2-mile maze of underground passages through layers of limestone with some huge, spectacular cavern rooms. The landowners developed the first 1/2 mile so tourists could enjoy it, and eventually it became a state park and a popular tourist attraction in Texas.

All those limestone cave sculptures are amazing!

And even though I'm not keen on being underground (the thought of a poorly-timed earthquake kept flitting through my mind...),...

Cavern-42

...it really was spectacular! That white line meandering down is the handrail...THAT'S how MASSIVE these underground rooms are!

Cavern-45

I was happy to see the sunshine again, but it is incredible to know there's so much mystery just below our feet!

Cavern-44

Over the years, the park has added other attractions...

...and the kids wanted to do the Canopy Challenge (basically a big, high climbing area)...

Cavern-51

...and zipline!

They panned for gold and gems...

Mama was pretty tuckered out from all the cave excitement, and she was content to sit in the shade and just chill while the kids did their thing and I took pictures.

Yep, that's her all by her lonesome over there...I think she was enjoying a moment of solitude and rest!

A gorgeous Texas day in a beautiful place...
