Mat Time

Scouttumbl-14

Seven-year-old Scout is not to be left behind in the House sports endeavors.

We werent' there the right days to watch her play basketball and soccer, but she never seems to run out of energy and is constantly doing cartwheels and handstands and backbends across their living room floor.

She's started taking a tumbling class in a nearby gym, and Mama and I got to watch her flip across the gym mats (through glass windows...hence the weird glare on some of the photos...) one afternoon.

The gym owner/instructor is a very nice guy from Iowa...

...and Scout loves every moment of her time there.

This time it's big sister Blaise's turn to wait...and grab those few free minutes to catch up on her homework.

Alli says Scout will never be a serious gymnast, as she won't have the body for it.  But she loves tumbling...she's strong and fearless...and it's a great energy-consumer, which she definitely needs!  She was thrilled to have Grandma Lois and Aunt Terry in her audience that evening.

Ethnwrestl-1

We left Scout's tumbling class and headed to Ethan's wrestling practice to watch him on the wrestling mat.

Ethnwrestl-8

These two former Olympic wrestlers have opened up a gym to teach youngsters their sport.

Mark feels very fortunate to have Ethan training with such high-quality coaches.  They teach Greco-Roman wrestling, which is different from the high school wrestling that I'm accustomed to.  Greco-Roman involves only the upper body...you can't use your legs to take people down.  (I'm sure that is a very simplistic explanation and there are many other differences between Freestyle and Greco-Roman, but that definition is good enough for me.)

Let me just say that it was a hot, stinky place to be...an un-air-conditioned gym with the Texas sunshine pouring in on those sweaty bodies...

Ethnwrestl-7

Ethan, in blue, added his own sweaty stinkiness to the gym atmosphere...

The trainers were very involved and spent lots of time showing and demonstrating moves...

Wrestling in not my cup of tea...I never understood why anyone would want to be grabbing another slick, sweaty body.  But Mark loved the sport, Ethan is enjoying it, and these coaches are clearly very passionate in their teaching.  I guess I must be missing something...

I'm so glad Mama and I were able to see our Texas athletes in action!

Our final evening in Texas was spent watching Scout and Ethan doing their thing with some...

...mat time.
