What a Difference a Year Makes

Easterelm-14

Easter 2015.  Just one year ago...

We had what would be our last family celebration with Dad, who was living in Elmcroft Alzheimer's unit, still physically strong.

We had NO IDEA how quickly things would spiral downward and that just a few weeks later we'd be gathering together again, this time to lay Daddy to rest.

He helped his great-grandchildren hunt Easter eggs in the Elmcroft courtyard...

And was his usual ornery self.

He even bargained some chocolate eggs from the children.

Dad has always loved his sweets.  I remember the Elmcroft nurse telling us that she sometimes would bribe him with jelly beans to get him take his medicine without a fuss.

I'm so very thankful for that day, as it would turn out to be the last time most in our family would see Daddy alive.

My daughter Emily and son-in-law Zach...

Son Kristoffer and daughter-in-law Dana...

Easterelm-29

My grandsons and his great-grandsons Karter and Kaden...

Easterelm-33

His great-granddaughter Kassie (as I recall, her sister Kelsey would not cooperate for the photo...imagine that...)...

Easterelm-30

My niece (Dad's granddaughter) Sarah and her son Austin...

I treasure these final photos of, considering the terrible circumstances, a pretty nice family day with some happy memories.

Yesterday, some of these same family members again gathered together after Easter dinner...

...this time to look at Dad's new monument.

Lots of memories, both happy and painful, came flooding back.

Mama has done well, considering everything.

Sometimes it's just hard to believe that Dad is really gone.

Eventually a military plaque will be mounted to the back under our names.

I imagine some days it seems like yesterday.
