Icy Majesty

Day #5 on the Coral Princess was spent cruising and viewing the spectacular landscapes of Glacier Bay National Park.
Yes, it was a bit on the chilly side...but Abram didn't mind!
The whole gang gathered in our room and onto the balcony for most of the day.
Prepare yourself for lots and lots of icy photos! Perfect for this steamy, late July day here in Indiana....
Cute little otter...
Cute little Karter...
One of my favorite photos of the day...and it had nothing at all to do with glaciers...
Literally hundreds and hundreds of birds followed out ship. My guess is that the ship stirred up some treats in the water.
Y'all know how I just love shorebirds....
But back to the glaciers...
Our ship stopped and did a complete 360-turn so everyone had a chance to see this big glacier at the end of the bay.
It really does look blue. Something about the compressed water and all the other colors are squeezed out...I'm sure that's not the proper scientific explanation...
And layers of rocks that the glacier scraped away as it traveled down the mountains...
We had several opportunities to witness glaciers "calving"...big chunks dropping off into the water. It was so eerily quiet and then we'd hear a big crack, like a whip, and soon after we'd see a section of ice crashing. Such power!
The children were not as impressed by the glaciers as the adults...they spent most of their time playing inside.
It's hard to visualize how massive these layers of ice are...
...but this gives you a little perspective. Those are kayakers!
I wouldn't want to be that close if the glacier decided to calve...the waves would surely tip over the kayak and that water is a mite chilly!
A little artsy view of the bay....
We did spot a couple of humpback whales, but they were pretty far away from the ship.
A little photo session in front of a glacier...
Kara and Kyler....
Emily and Zach...
Kristoffer and Dana....
My father-in-law Kenny...
Kim and me (sporting my au naturale hair look...)...
Oh...and Kelsey wanted her turn too!
(This photo credit: Karter, my 7-year-old photography protege! Yes, I'm a proud Gramaw...)
Definitely one of the cruise highlights, being with my peeps and taking in such breath-taking views of...
...icy majesty.
