East and Up in The Yukon
07/29/2015
Just outside the village of Carcross, Yukon, Canada was one of the most surprising sights (and sites!) of the day.
The Carcross Desert...billed by Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest desert in the world.
Actually it's not a desert at all, but a square mile of sand dunes created by glaciers over the centuries. Very unusual and so unexpected!
I was pretty proud of myself for spotting these Dall sheep on the hillside...until our guide told us that they were totally fake, put there to attract customers to the business below. I guess real Dall sheep live a lot HIGHER up than that...
Emerald Lake...so beautiful and serene...
We cut off the Klondike Highway and headed east a few miles...
...then we REALLY got off the highway and started climbing up Jubilee Mountain.
I felt sure we'd see some bears on this stretch of deserted gravel road, but the only wildlife we saw were a few birds and a couple of arctic chipmunks.
Fireweed gets its name for two reasons: in autumn its leaves turn bright red, and when there's a forest fire (always happening in these forests) fireweed is one of the first plants to begin growing again.
This patch of fireweed is growing where a lightning strike a few years ago burned out this circle of trees.
Spectacular view from the top of Jubilee Mountain, elevation nearly 6000 feet!
Kenny scoping out the scene...
The big U-shaped valleys were carved out by glaciers over the centuries...
Only the hardiest of plants survives winters up here...
What goes up must go down....
Mile upon mile of pure wilderness, massive glaciers, and stunning landscapes...
...as we headed back toward the good old USA.
The obligatory group shot as we re-entered Alaska after our day's adventures...
Photographs don't even begin to do this place justice! It's impossible to even soak in all the wild beauty and untamed majesty surrounding us.
A person feels very small against this backdrop of immense beauty!
God pulled out all the stops when He created this masterpiece...
...east and up in The Yukon.
Wow - absolutely beautiful!!!! I am loving this trip (and it was already on my bucket list)!!
