Two Turn Two
Butterfly Birthday Bash

Seventy Years Later

BudElbert

I don't have the date for this photo, but I'm guessing my dad (on the left) was about twelve years and old and Elbert about ten.

First cousins, two ornery country boys who grew up very close to each other.

Of course, I don't know what all adventures these two had together over the years, but I'm sure there are stories that we'll never know.

Dad turned eighty a couple of years ago, and last weekend he celebrated Elbert's milestone 80th birthday with him.

Elbert-2

Dad (now 82) and Elbert (80) reminisced about the good old days.  I'm guessing, because at this point that's about all either of them can remember clearly.

Dad has Alzheimer's and Elbert was recently diagnosed with the same horrific disease.

Two strong, can-do, vital, hard-working men...those of us who were blessed to grow up in the warmth of their love and nurturing will always remember them like that.

Elbert-1

As a child, our families spent lots and lots of time together.  Wilma was one of Mama's closest friends, and we all went to the same small country church together.  We were the definition of "extended family."

And even though we don't see each other nearly enough or share our lives like we did when we were all much younger, when we all get together it's as if the years just magically roll away and we pick up where we left off.

Just like Dad and Elbert did at his birthday.  Remembering days long gone by like it was yesterday...

...seventy years later.

Terry, thank you for the photos and reminders. I vividly recall being in our kitchen while our folks played cards around the table. I can also remember how I so envied your family for having a porch and swing! Such a blessing you are to all of us for capturing these moments on film - well, digits I suppose, and sharing your memories to jar ours.

Thanks Terry, there are so many great memories that seem so recent....Do you remember our dad's ping-pond tournaments in our small kitchen? I also remember the rotating Sunday dinners and so much more. I suppose in the scheme of things these memories are recent....
